Though it bears the French name for carnation, the “Bengale Œillet” is actually a variety of China rose, and the muse for Aedes de Venustas’ third scent, created by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux. A flower on fire, a rose that wants to be a carnation, set ablaze by an exotic spice explosion. Red petals turned black by frankincense. A shape-shifting blossom, the rose’s hijack of the carnation’s name reflects its volatile personality.
Carnation is a flamboyant retro charmer that borrows facets from rose and ylang ylang. A bright, peppery bergamot sends off the first sparks. An incense stick sets the scent ablaze.
Driven into the heart of Œillet Bengale, it binds the citrusy top notes to the sweet resinous base, acting as the flower’s stem. Black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, clove, saffron, and an unusual lash of citrusy, herbaceous, gingery turmeric add to the fireworks. It is then that the amber base and sweet balsams – vanilla, tolu benzoin and labdanum tame the fire to a settled smoulder on the skin.
